Our Industry:

Every day, hundreds of millions of Americans turn
on the faucet or adjust the thermostat in their home
without giving it a second thought. And, the
majority of us get just what we’ve come to expect …
clean, clear, drinkable water and a comfortable,
safe living environment.
“This hasn’t always been the case,” said plumbing contractor Jim Stack, president of the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors – National Association (PHCC).” “Over the years, societies worldwide have come to understand that serious health hazards result when drinking water and waste systems are not properly installed and maintained. Bacterial and other diseases during the Middle Ages, and even today in some parts of the world, were and still are responsible for the deaths of millions. |

Fortunately, many of these problems have been resolved in the United States with new technologies and stringent building codes developed with the aid of experts like engineers, sanitary inspectors and installing contractors.
However, technology and more sophisticated energy-efficient home building designs have opened the door to other dangers. Backflow contamination in water systems and carbon monoxide, radon, and airborne particulates, such as mold, asbestos, dust, mites, can cause serious health risks and in some circumstances, even death. Proper installation, venting, air filtration systems and maintenance can substantially reduce or eliminate these new health hazards.
Yet, proper installation and maintenance appears to have taken a back seat to the ‘do-it-yourself’ trends that have become popular with consumers. “Unfortunately, homeowners are often so focused on the potential cost savings from doing a job themselves or by hiring a handyman instead of a professional contractor,” Stack noted, “that they forget how important having the job done right is to the health and safety of their families.”
“A professional p-h-c contractor has the training and expertise to evaluate problems with your plumbing, heating or cooling system, recommend the most effective and cost efficient solutions, and make the installation or repair in accordance with local code specifications,” he continued. “By hiring a professional, consumers can actually save money and, more importantly protect their families and homes.”
In recognition of the important skills and services professional plumbing, heating and cooling experts provide, PHCC celebrated “Appreciate Your Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Professional Week” June 18-25, 2006.
“Appreciate Your Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Professional Week ties in with the June 1883 anniversary of the founding of PHCC. Formed in 1883, PHCC provides legislative advocacy, education and training to more than 4,000 plumbing and HVACR businesses and more than 80,000 technicians. Members of PHCC have access to a wide variety of services designed to increase their professionalism, grow their business and improve profitability.
PHCC's mission statement is the guiding principle of the association:
"The Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors-National Association is dedicated to the promotion, advancement, education and training of the industry for the protection of the environment, and the health, safety and comfort of society."
