How We Connect Your Exterior Faucet
We search first in basements and crawl spaces under homes. We look for both cold and hot water pipes. If you are only looking for watering plants then cold water will do, but if you’ll use it for cleaning your car or others, then you might want both hot and cold. We will need to know what you intend with the new water outlets or whether you will be working in the garden, watering plants, washing cars or washing up after yard work. If your intended area of need is some distance from your home, then trenching and laying the pipe might be required.
No matter where your work area is located, however, it’s best if we can install a shut off valve inside the home to make winterizing easier. By turning off the valve inside the home and opening the faucets on the exterior of the home, water can be drained thereby eliminating most of your freezing worries. If a turn-off valve is not used, then we recommend frost-free outdoor faucets (also called a sillcock) for each exterior faucet.
How Do I Fix an Outdoor Faucet That Won't Turn Off?
Just like any type of faucet, once the fixture starts to wear down it will likely start to drip constantly. Replacing the worn out part with new ones isn't a terribly difficult project, and can typically be done with simple tools and some parts you can buy at your local hardware store:
- Turn off the shutoff valve. Once this is done, open the outside faucet all the way to make sure the water flow is properly turned off and nothing remains in the pipes.
- Take two adjustable wrenches to loosen the faucet. Use the first to loosen up the section just behind the packing nut and fasten the second where the faucet and the pipe connected to the building, preventing it from freely spinning.
- Pull on the valve handle to slide the valve assembly out of the pipe. Use a wrench to remove any nuts in the assembly.
- Use a flat head screwdriver to remove the washer from the assembly. Using the flat head screwdriver, unscrew and pry away the compression washer.
- Replace the worn parts with new ones. The washers are the most likely culprit, but replace any stripped screws or worn out nuts as well before reassembling and reinserting the faucet to the water pipe.
Benefits of Having an Outdoor Faucet
Have you ever had to carry buckets of water from your shower or bathtub outside to wash the car? Have you ever been working in the yard and thought how much nicer it would be to clean yourself up a little bit before tracking much of the backyard into your home? Exterior faucets can make life easier for you. We take precautions both during installation and afterward to complete caulking and insulation steps to keep cold air from seeping into your home.
Here are some of the benefits of exterior faucet installation in Tacoma:
- You won’t need extra-long garden hoses and connections
- You can use hot water to clean your car, mower, or windows without using a bucket brigade
